Over the past year, Gemini, Google’s cutting-edge AI, has taken center stage on Pixel and other Android phones, perhaps even worrying some that Google Assistant will soon join the Killed by Google graveyard. However, it appears your trusty voice assistant isn’t going anywhere just yet. In fact, it’s about to get a serious upgrade.

Google has announced that while Gemini is the future for Pixel phones, Google Assistant will stay right where it belongs — powering your Nest smart home devices. After showcasing Gemini’s AI wizardry on phones and the web over the past year, Google is ready to sprinkle some of that magic on its smart home lineup. Alongside the launch of the Google TV Streamer and the 4th-gen Nest Learning Thermostat, the tech giant has revealed how the Gemini updates will enhance the Google Assistant experience on Nest displays and speakers.

The upgraded Google Assistant, fueled by Gemini’s large language models (LLMs), aims to be more natural and helpful for everyone in your household. Unlike your personal Pixel phone, which is all about you, smart home devices need to cater to every family member. This means that conversations with Google Assistant are set to become smoother and more intuitive. Picture yourself having a back-and-forth chat with Google Assistant without needing to phrase your questions perfectly. Ask if Pluto is still considered a planet and seamlessly follow up with deeper queries. The goal is to preserve context and make interactions feel like a real conversation. Here’s an example:

Beyond casual chit-chat, the Gemini-powered Google Assistant will also enhance practical tasks. Need to find a specific song? Just ask Google Assistant to “play that song Beyonce performed with the Chicks at the CMAs.” Want to create a relaxing bedtime routine? Tell Google, “Help me wind down,” and let Assistant handle the rest.

It’s like having a personal assistant who’s constantly learning and improving. And the best part? This isn’t a distant dream. While the full rollout is planned for 2025, early access is coming to Nest Aware subscribers later this year.

So, while Gemini might not be ready to fully take over, rest assured that Google Assistant isn’t going anywhere either. It’s just getting a major glow-up thanks to Gemini.
